Changes in urine colour can occur for several reasons, including dehydration, certain foods, medications and other factors. However, if there is an unusual change in urine colour without any obvious explanation, it should not be ignored, and medical advice should be sought.
Normally, clear or pale-yellow urine may indicate adequate hydration. Dark-yellow urine, on the other hand, is commonly associated with dehydration. However, urine colour alone cannot be used to diagnose kidney disease. A proper medical evaluation and, when necessary, appropriate tests are important to determine the underlying cause.
Pink, red or brownish urine may sometimes result from certain foods, but it can also indicate the presence of blood in the urine. Possible causes include kidney stones, urinary tract infections and certain kidney or urinary bladder conditions. Therefore, persistent or unexplained changes in urine colour should be evaluated by a doctor.
Urine that is persistently unusually foamy or bubbly may sometimes indicate the presence of excess protein in the urine. In certain cases, this can be associated with kidney disease. Dark-brown or cola-coloured urine can also occur due to several causes, including dehydration, certain foods or medications, infections, liver-related conditions, or blood and other substances in the urine. Such changes should not be overlooked.
The kidneys play a vital role in removing waste products and excess fluid from the body while helping maintain the body’s balance of fluids, salts and minerals. When kidney function is impaired, waste products and excess fluid may accumulate in the body. Therefore, apart from urine colour, symptoms such as changes in urine output, burning or pain while urinating, persistent foam, blood in the urine, unusual odour or swelling should also be taken seriously.
Overall, a change in urine colour does not necessarily mean that a person has kidney disease. However, if the change persists or is accompanied by symptoms such as pain, fever, blood in the urine, reduced urine output or swelling, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
