For Comprehensive Treatment of Prostate Problems — iUKD
A landmark NHS study has found that incorporating the STAMINA lifestyle intervention programme into the treatment of men receiving hormone therapy for prostate cancer may significantly improve treatment-related outcomes. Conducted in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, the NHS and Nuffield Health, the trial is one of the largest studies of its kind to date.
The study is the first to integrate a lifestyle intervention programme—including supervised exercise, healthy eating and nutrition advice, lifestyle counselling and behavioural support—with routine cancer care on a large scale within the NHS.
The findings suggest that the STAMINA lifestyle intervention programme may help reduce some of the debilitating side effects associated with Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT). Compared with standard prostate cancer care, participants in the programme experienced less deterioration in prostate cancer-related quality of life and lower levels of fatigue, along with an overall improvement in cancer-related quality of life.
ADT reduces testosterone production in the body, thereby helping to slow the growth of prostate cancer and control the disease. However, the treatment can cause side effects such as fatigue, increased abdominal fat, loss of muscle mass, reduced bone density, an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and psychological distress.
Prostate enlargement in men is commonly associated with ageing and hormonal changes. The condition is particularly common among men in their 40s and 50s. As men age, the number of cells in the prostate gland may increase as part of a natural process. At the same time, testosterone levels generally decline with age, while the effects of dihydrotestosterone and oestrogen may contribute to prostate enlargement. Genetic or family history may also play a role. Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and excess body weight may further increase the risk of prostate enlargement.
