While high blood pressure and diabetes are well-known major causes of kidney disease, recent research has also highlighted a possible association between severe dental disease, particularly periodontal disease, and reduced kidney function.
A study published in the International Journal of Oral Science examined the relationship between severe periodontal disease and kidney health. Researchers from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany conducted comprehensive periodontal examinations of 6,179 participants and assessed their kidney function. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary protein ratio were among the parameters used to evaluate kidney health. The researchers also assessed levels of inflammation in the body.
The findings showed that severe periodontal disease was associated with reduced kidney function and an increase in certain markers of kidney damage. In particular, the presence of albumin or protein in the urine may be an important early indicator of kidney damage.
How Can Dental Disease Affect the Kidneys?
Long-standing infection and inflammation of the gums may not remain confined to the mouth. Chronic inflammatory responses in the body can have wider effects on overall health. Research suggests that processes such as systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and metabolic changes may contribute to the association between severe periodontal disease and reduced kidney function.
However, it is important to understand that dental disease should not be described as a direct cause of kidney failure. Rather, growing evidence suggests an association between severe, untreated periodontal disease and kidney problems. Therefore, maintaining good oral and dental health is an important part of overall health.
