Diabetes Specialist Available Every Saturday at iUKD
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which maintaining healthy blood glucose levels is extremely important. It occurs when the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. As a result, glucose levels in the blood increase. If diabetes remains uncontrolled for a prolonged period, it can lead to several complications affecting the kidneys, heart, eyes and nervous system. Therefore, people living with diabetes need to pay special attention to their dietary habits and lifestyle, alongside prescribed medication.
Diet plays a significant role in diabetes management. Replacing some refined carbohydrate foods with fibre-rich alternatives can be beneficial. In particular, rotis prepared from whole grains can be included as part of a balanced diet. However, not all rotis have the same nutritional value. Their effects on blood glucose levels depend on the type of flour, carbohydrate content, portion size and glycaemic index.
Refined flour, commonly known as maida, is produced by removing much of the bran and fibre from wheat. Consequently, it contains considerably less fibre than whole-wheat flour. Whole-wheat atta, on the other hand, retains more dietary fibre and other nutrients. Therefore, choosing whole-wheat atta instead of refined flour is generally a better dietary option.
Apart from whole-wheat atta, rotis made from gram flour (besan), sorghum (jowar) and finger millet (ragi) can also be considered. Besan provides protein and dietary fibre, while jowar contains magnesium, protein and fibre. Ragi is another nutritious grain that provides dietary fibre and essential minerals. Including these grains in a balanced diet may help improve satiety and support better blood glucose management.
People with diabetes should also be mindful of portion sizes. The recommended daily intake of rotis varies from person to person depending on age, body weight, physical activity, medication and blood glucose levels. Therefore, consulting a doctor or qualified dietitian is essential to determine the appropriate quantity. Eating rotis alone does not control diabetes; a balanced diet, regular physical activity and proper medical treatment are equally important.
