Can Diarrhoea Lead to Kidney Failure ?

Severe Dehydration Can Be a Major Cause of Acute Kidney Injury

Diarrhoea is often treated at home with basic supportive care. However, many people may not be aware that severe dehydration caused by diarrhoea can sometimes lead to acute kidney injury (AKI).

During diarrhoea, the body can lose significant amounts of water and electrolytes. Therefore, preventing dehydration is extremely important. ORS, adequate fluid intake and appropriate medical care as advised by a doctor can help prevent complications. In severe dehydration, reduced blood flow to the kidneys may impair kidney function and can result in Acute Kidney Injury.

Apart from dehydration, several other factors can affect kidney function. These include working for long periods in extreme heat without adequate fluid intake, prolonged or inappropriate use of painkillers without medical advice, an enlarged prostate, kidney stones, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain urinary tract infections.

Therefore, when suffering from diarrhoea, it is important to take adequate measures to prevent dehydration. Similarly, regular use of painkillers without consulting a doctor should be avoided.

Warning Signs of Kidney Problems

Reduced urine output, blood in the urine, pain in the lower abdomen or urinary tract, swelling around the eyes or ankles, excessive weakness and pale skin may indicate an underlying health problem and should not be ignored.

Depending on the symptoms, blood and urine tests, ultrasound and other appropriate investigations may help doctors identify kidney-related problems.

How Can You Protect Your Kidneys?

Regular physical activity, adequate hydration, maintaining a healthy body weight, avoiding smoking and limiting excessive salt intake can contribute to better kidney and overall health.

People living with diabetes or high blood pressure should be particularly careful and undergo regular health check-ups, as both conditions can increase the risk of kidney disease.
