Don’t ignore the problem—consult a specialist
The human body produces various waste substances as a result of normal metabolic processes, and the kidneys help eliminate these unwanted substances through urine. However, many people experience a frequent urge to urinate after going to bed or have to wake up several times during the night to pass urine. This can significantly disturb sleep and affect overall well-being and daily life.
In medical terms, frequent urination during the night is known as nocturia. Waking up once or twice to urinate may be normal for some people. However, if the urge occurs frequently and regularly disrupts sleep, it is important to identify the underlying cause and seek medical advice.
Possible Causes of Frequent Night-Time Urination
Excessive water intake before bedtime:
Drinking large amounts of water immediately before going to bed can fill the bladder and increase the need to urinate during the night.
High blood sugar:
When blood sugar levels are excessively high, the kidneys may excrete additional glucose through urine. This can increase urine production and lead to frequent urination, including at night.
Certain medications:
Diuretics, or water pills, can increase urine production, particularly if taken later in the day. The timing or dosage of any medication should be changed only after consulting a doctor.
Overactive bladder:
When the bladder becomes overactive, a person may experience a frequent or sudden urge to urinate. This can occur particularly in women during or after menopause.
Age-related changes:
As people grow older, changes in the body’s production and regulation of antidiuretic hormone can contribute to increased urine production at night.
Apart from these factors, nocturia may also be associated with chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, prostate-related problems and urinary tract infections. Excessive consumption of caffeine or alcohol at night, sleep disorders and anxiety may also worsen the problem.
When Should You Consult a Doctor?
If frequent night-time urination persists for a long period, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by symptoms such as weakness, swelling of the hands or feet, excessive thirst, burning while urinating or other unusual symptoms, it is important to consult a specialist without delay.
Depending on the underlying cause, a urologist or nephrologist may recommend appropriate tests and treatment. People should not completely stop drinking water or change their prescribed medications without medical advice simply to reduce night-time urination.
