It develops when the body does not produce enough insulin or is unable to use insulin effectively, resulting in an increased level of glucose or sugar in the blood. Excess blood sugar places additional stress on the kidneys. When the kidney filters become damaged, proteins—particularly albumin—may begin to leak into the urine. This may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. As kidney damage progresses, symptoms such as swelling of the feet and ankles, frequent urination, excessive tiredness and weakness may develop.
Diabetes can also damage nerves and affect bladder function. In some patients, the bladder may not empty completely, causing urine to remain in the bladder for prolonged periods. This can increase the risk of urinary tract infections and, in certain cases, may contribute to kidney damage.
For people living with diabetes, regular kidney check-ups are extremely important. Monitoring blood sugar levels, blood pressure, kidney function and urine albumin/protein can help detect kidney damage at an early stage and may help slow its progression.
