Advanced Treatment for Prostate Cancer and Other Prostate Disorders at iUKD
The prostate gland is a small, walnut-sized gland of the male reproductive system. It is located just below the urinary bladder and helps produce part of the fluid that forms semen. This fluid nourishes and protects sperm and helps transport sperm during ejaculation.
With increasing age, many men experience enlargement of the prostate. This becomes particularly common after the age of 40โ50. An enlarged prostate can put pressure on the urethra and cause various urinary symptoms. However, prostate enlargement, prostate infection and prostate cancer are different conditions. Therefore, persistent urinary symptoms should not be ignored and should be evaluated by a qualified doctor.
Common Symptoms of Prostate Problems
- Frequent urination, particularly repeated urination at night
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak or interrupted urinary stream
- Dribbling after urination
- A feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely
- Burning or pain during urination
- Difficulty controlling or holding urine
- Blood in the urine
- Pain or discomfort in the pelvic region
These symptoms should not simply be attributed to ageing without proper medical evaluation.
Causes and Risk Factors
Ageing is one of the major factors associated with benign prostate enlargement. Hormonal changes that occur with age may contribute to the growth of prostate tissue. Family history, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease may also be associated with an increased risk of prostate enlargement.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Treatment depends on the patientโs age, symptoms, prostate size, medical history and investigation results. Depending on the clinical situation, a doctor may recommend a physical examination, urine tests, ultrasound, PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing and other investigations.
For suitable patients with benign prostate enlargement, medicines such as alpha-blockers (e.g., tamsulosin) and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (e.g., finasteride) may be prescribed to control symptoms and reduce prostate-related obstruction.
When medication is insufficient or symptoms are severe, a surgical procedure may be required. TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) is a widely used procedure for treating benign prostate enlargement. Modern techniques such as HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) and other laser-based procedures may also be considered for appropriate patients.
Prostate Cancer: Early Evaluation Matters
Prostate cancer may not cause obvious symptoms during its early stages. Therefore, appropriate screening and medical evaluation are important, particularly for men with relevant age or family-history risk factors.
PSA is a blood test used to help assess the possibility of prostate cancer, but PSA alone cannot confirm cancer. Depending on the findings, a urologist may recommend further investigations, including imaging and, when appropriate, a biopsy.
